The Salt Room Brighton Review

My partner and I wanted to go somewhere nice to celebrate our three-year anniversary, and I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about The Salt Room in Brighton.

It’s right on the seafront and describes itself as “a modern British seafood restaurant that celebrates the flavours of cooking over coal”. It’s won lots of awards for sustainability and the produce is all local. It’s got the most incredible views of the sea – it has a large shaded terrace too which I bet is lovely when it’s warm.

Of course, the food is the main event, but I’d also heard amazing things about their cocktails. I decided to go for the Botanist Cup. It had Bombay Sapphire, cucumber, elderflower, prosecco, vanilla, and lemon. I’m not the biggest gin fan if it’s just with a tonic, but when it’s in a cocktail I really like it! This cocktail was really fresh and summery.

To start, I had the octopus. It came in a red wine sauce with lentils and chorizo, which perfectly complemented the octopus. It was quite a rich sauce, but the portion size was perfect and the amount of octopus was very generous.

For mains, we decided to go for the Surf Board to share. It featured a selection of shellfish from the South Coast and Scotland (random I know) grilled over fire. It had prawns, crab, langoustine, cockles, oysters, mussels, squid, and scallops. I am so glad we went for this as it meant we got to try so many different bits. The serving was really generous, there was lots of each type and my favourite was the crab. SOOO tasty and fresh. We also had a side of chips which came with garlic mayo and charcoal mayo… not sure if I really liked the charcoal to be honest but the chips were perfect for mopping up all the juices from the plate of fish.

When I mentioned at work that I was going to The Salt Room, absolutely everyone said “you have to try the sharer dessert!”. Literally everyone. So when we were there, how could we not? It’s called Taste of the Pier and is for two to share. First up, I ate the Orange meringue ‘99’ – simply described, an ice cream cone! It was deeelicious orange meringue in a beautiful delicate cone. Next, ‘pebbles’ which were rich dark chocolate. The raspberry and yuzu mallow was super sweet with a very sour top which worked so perfectly together. The blackcurrant caramel was sort of like a very posh boiled sweet! Quite a strange texture but a really rich flavour. The strawberry and white chocolate bark was AMAZING, considering I don’t usually like white chocolate I really enjoyed it. What’s a pier without candy floss? Probably the nicest candy floss I’ve ever had haha. Finally, a hibiscus doughnut. What a flavour! I’ve never tried anything like it. Strong, sweet and sour somehow all at once!? It was a completely new flavour for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

One of my favourite things about the Salt Room was how lovely the staff were. I didn’t catch the name of our waiter, but he was so lovely and helpful. Sometimes in fancy restaurants, it can be quite intimidating to ask questions about what’s on the menu. At the Salt Room, our waiter was keen to answer our questions and explain the menu to us, it really made a difference to our experience. I wasn’t afraid to ask him anything I could think of about the food and he was happy to explain.

If you’re a seafood lover and you’re looking for somewhere special to eat in Brighton, the Salt Room is the place to go. The food is delicious and generous, the cocktails are top notch and it’s got a great atmosphere with friendly staff and Insta-worthy interiors. I already want to go back.
