My lovely neighbours gave me a giftcard for Plateau after I looked after their dog for the weekend, and honestly I had never heard of it. I asked around, and everyone at work said the food is incredible and it’s got a great vibe, so I was excited to try it out.
We went early evening on a Sunday, and there was only a few other people in there. This was great for us as it meant we got our food and drinks served quickly! First up, I had a cocktail. I had a ‘lost for words’ which was portobello road gin, velvet falernum, yellow chartreuse, lime pineapple.
It was bitter but sweet at the same time, I’ve never had a cocktail like it. I’m not a huge gin fan usually, but I absolutely loved it in this cocktail.
We decided to go for the set menu, which is three courses for £20.
For my starter I chose purple sprouting broccoli which came with taramasalata. The broccoli was smokey which went perfectly with the taramasalata. It was absolutely delicious.
For mains, I had pan fried cod, january king and butterbeans. It came in an incredible sauce that was buttery, garlic-ey and divine. I even asked for a spoon so I could get every last bit of it haha! The cod was juicy and full of flavour. I had no idea what january king was, turns out it’s some sort of cabbage. It went perfectly with the butterbeans and fish.
To finish, I opted for the Neal’s Yard cheese. I kind of had to manage my expectations when it came to this – I was slightly disappointed to see that it was just one type of cheese on the board. I reminded myself that it was a three course dinner for £20, so it wasn’t going to be an enormous plate! It came with pickled walnuts which I had never tried before but were so tasty. Without any chutney it was a little dry, but the cheese was lovely.
Places like Plateau can end up costing a fortune if you get lots of the little plates and try everything. The set menu is a great way to try bits from the main menu but on a budget. I thought the portion sizes were great, the food was delicious and it was well worth the £20 it cost. From what I’ve seen on the website, they change up what’s on the set menu fairly often so I will definitely be going back to try more of Plateau‘s food!
