Ask anyone for a pizza recommendation in Brighton and Purezza will 100% come up. So I finally decided it was time I gave it a go, especially as I had a vegan friend visiting.
Purezza was founded in 2015 and was the first vegan pizzeria in the UK! They describe themselves as “plant pioneers, revolutionising Italian food through cruelty-free ingredients”. The pizza dough is based on a traditional family recipe and is freshly made each day, with a wide range of gluten-free options too.
The menu is really intriguing – I’m always super interested by vegan menus and what they use to make the vegan alternatives. For example, the artisan mozzarella is made using a delicately crafted fermentation of organic Italian brown rice milk. I’m a big cheese lover but I’m always up for trying vegan options.
I have to say, I was completely wow-ed by the Purezza cheese. To start, I went for the Dough Balls – three cheesy bites made with sourdough for £4.45. They oooooze the homemade melty cheese in the best way. I am honestly overwhelmed by how good this vegan cheese is. I’ve found in the past that vegan cheese doesn’t really melt properly, but this is like cheesy lava! So gooey and stringy and melty. It’s unreal.
For my pizza, I had the Telling Porkies – a white base with melted cheddar, mixed wild forest mushrooms, marinated pulled BBQ pieces and sundried tomatoes. Good lord. This is pretty much my dream pizza. I am partial to a white base with a BBQ flavour, and I really cannot fault a single part of this pizza. It’s utter perfection.
The marinated pulled BBQ pieces are super sweet but balanced out by the mushrooms and the sundried tomatoes. The cheese is stringy and brings everything together. Each bite is heaven. The toppings are packed on – you for sure get your monies worth at just £11.95. Vegan or not, it’s one of the best pizzas I’ve had in Brighton.
I’m already keen to go back – I spotted a calzone on the menu with shaved seitan and caramelised onions which sounds soooo tasty. Plus I also spotted their Oreo Pizza. Crumbled Oreos with a creamy hazelnut chocolate spread? Ohhhhh my god YES. I’m already planning my next visit. I want to eat my way through the entire menu tbh.
